Sounds Film Festival will take place from 17-19 October at Gilmorehill G12. This festival came out of a need to give Glasgow a dedicated annual film festival of music covering all genres. Glasgow has a tradition of being a great cinema-going city and also has a rich and diverse music scene, which is recognised and celebrated worldwide. This reputation has also recently seen Glasgow being named a United Nations City of Music.
We are promoting great Scottish music in this inaugural festival by giving the feature length version of Ballads of the Book its premiere screening. This is a fascinatingly rich film, which pairs off some Scotland’s best writers and musicians to create beautiful collaborative pieces of music. This film took over two years to complete and we are delighted in having the film makers in attendance to introduce their film on the night.
Other screenings include Johnny Cash: Christmas 1981, which has never been seen outside of the USA. This exclusive screening could sell out if we screened it for a month! This amazing TV special features Johnny live in Edinburgh, walking around the old town and taking trips to the city zoo and a cruise on Loch Katrine. It features very rare performances by him and is also accompanied by his wife June Carter Cash. This will be screening with the The Gospel Truth? - an amazing documentary by Eyline Media, which attempts to trace the history of Gospel Music to the ‘lining-out’ style of singing from Scotland’s Western Isles. It is a truly remarkable story narrated and presented by Dr Robert Beckford. A MUST SEE programme!!!
We are also screening movies featuring the music of The Sex Pistols, Woody Guthrie; Jimmy Cliffe, 60’s psychedelia, 50’s Rock n Roll, and a collection of imaginative shorts by The Magic Lantern. Oh, and yes, we are also screening a surprise closing film, which we promise, will not disappoint!
There is no theme to this year’s three-day festival. The programme is simply a celebration of the variety of music that enriches our day-to-day lives.
